The Health Benefits of Colon Cleansing

Colon Cleanse: Health Benefits of Colon Cleansing

Colon cleanseColon cleansing and full body detoxification have become quite popular in recent years.  Once something only known to the elite, now anyone can get a colon cleanse or full body detox done, usually at a day spa or clinic.  What is a colon cleanse or full body detox?  A colon cleanse is a procedure where a trained colonic therapist will flush water into your intestines (colon) through a tube that is inserted into your rectum.  Depending on the type of cleansing you are getting, sometimes the water may include herbs, teas, enzymes or even coffee.  It is believed that the colon walls trap unwanted waste, compacted fecal matter and bacteria that the water will flush away during the cleansing process.

You might be wondering, “Why get a colon cleansing?”  Perhaps you are feeling sluggish and tired. Maybe you just feel as if something is not right in your body or you just feel that you need a detox.

A colon cleanse will help to eliminate or flush toxic poisons out of your body, or more specifically, out of your colon.  A clogged colon disrupts the digestive system, so removing the clog will get your system moving again.  Some believe the colon cleanse is a safe way to lose weight.  It certainly gives you a clean slate to start with, and it will increase you energy level, giving you the boost you need to start that exercise program.

As with any procedure, there are side effects of a colon cleansing.  There are things you can do, however, to alleviate or minimize the side effects.

Side effects or risks can include: an increase risk of dehydration, an increase risk of infection, cramping, nausea, possible interactions with your medications and a possible electrolyte imbalance. Due to the possible interaction with medications you are currently taking, you should consult with your doctor before having a colon cleanse procedure.

In order to minimize the above side effects, you need to know how to prepare for a colon cleanse properly.  These are the things you will need to do starting the day before your procedure to insure a successful colon cleansing.

  • Reduce fat and sugar intake
  • Drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration
  • Refrain from eating 8-12 hours prior to the colon cleansing
  • Relax your mind and body before the cleansing process

Relaxation is important as you are going into the procedure. This is a body cleansing experience and the more relaxed you are, the easier it will be for both you and the therapist. During the procedure, your therapist may press around your abdomen a bit to insure that she is getting every nook and cranny.

Once the procedure has been completed, your therapist can discuss with you how often you will need to return for follow-up sessions to insure that your colon remains properly cleansed.
